Block unwanted pictures in Firefox

Sometimes websites have pictures relevant to the content on the site, and sometimes they are just annoying. Firefox has a little discussed feature to allow you to block pictures from certain websites. While this method won’t block flash enabled advertisements, it still comes in very handy if you want to block offensive or annoying graphic ads.

It is simple to enable, in Firefox, just right-click one of the image advertisements you don’t want to appear anymore and click the selection “Block images from <name of website here>”. Be advised, this blocks ALL images from the site serving that advertisement and the server sending the advertisement is most likely not the website you are viewing at the time.

To re-enable pictures from a website in Firefox, click Tools, Options, then click the Content tab. Click the Exceptions button to the right of “load images automatically”. You can add or remove sites from the banned list there.

It would be nice if Firefox included a feature that allowed you to globally allow all of your blocked sites without removing them from the list so that you could determine which site it was that you blocked. I blocked an ad at Weather.com and it also blocked all of the forecast icons. Now I can’t figure out which site it was that I blocked. My only recourse, it seems, is to remove all of my blocked sites and start over again blocking sites! That feature is available.

Another way to do this is by using K9 software. It is free and license for home use only. Check them out they are excellent.
